Dear Lactnet Friends:

Most physiologic jaundice is the result of what Dr. Lawrence Gartner calls
"Lack of breastmilk jaundice."

Most babies that breastfeed at least 8 or 9 times in 24 hours the first few
days of life won't get physiologic jaundice. I've heard stories about this;
one attributed to Dr Barbara Philipp who took her pediatric residents to
the nursery to teach them about managing jaundice....only there weren't any
jaundiced babies in the nursery. The nursery was in a Baby Friendly
Hospital; all the babies were with their mothers, nursing enough.

Breastfeeding babies have seemed to be more jaundiced because they don't
get to breastfeed enough. They are in the nursery at night (so mom can
rest) or in the nursery waiting for rounds/vital signs/weighing, or
double-wrapped with plugs in their mouths (unable to show feeding cues
because their hands are tied.)

DeCarvalho and Japanese researchers Yamouchi and Yamanouchi (? spelling)
both showed clearly that there was an inverse relationship between serum
bilirubin and breastfeeding. The more breastfeeding, the lower the bili.

Show skeptical staff the evidence. Show them the lovely policy available
for free from www.bfmed.org (the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine).

warmly,
