My approach to the pacifier issue (which has been very effective w/ my new parents and the docs as well) is:
Pacifiers are "calorie burners". Babies suck away -expending energy/ burning calories and get nothing in return resulting in greater weight loss/jaundice. At the same time, the moms who should be nursing instead -well their breast are understimulated resulting in marginal supply.
  Whah-la! Weight loss/jaundice + low milk supply= FORMULA!!!!
Parents & Peds are so "reactive" to any weight loss and jaundice making this explanation perfect for the first few weeks.
