Many good answers already. I have seen some babies not gaining wt who were
peeing and pooping reassurring amounts and consistencies. Don't remember if
they have lost that much weight. Usually when they do they have actually
gone a couple days w/o stooling and have significant juandice.
Important points:
- check / recheck all the weights if you can
- assess mom's supply / production / frequency and length of feeds / use of
pacifier / scheduling
- protect / increase mom' s production if it's low
- find out what baby is taking in and what he needs (pre/post wts or pump
and feed)
- if he is taking in adequate amts (I use approx 75 mls x birthweight in
lbs, with 7#8 being 7.5), and doesn't gain wt overnite (in my experience),
then he needs medical eval for infection, cardiac, or metabolic e.g. If not
enough breastmilk use substitute.
- if he is offered adequate amts (see above), verified by pre/post or pump
and feed, but he refuses, then he needs medical eval as well.
hope this helps.
