It reminds me of a conference I was at for childbirth educators and a
session about lactation help (given by long time LLL Chele Marmet) she told the
group about referring moms to LLL. You never know if they are calling a
Leader with her first phone call or a Leader who has doing this for 20 years
– so don’t be afraid to call back or call a different leader you can be
getting different skill sets. It doesn’t mean as a Leader we are not
allowed to learn or to say I think I saw something like this before. . .
~~~ I would say the same thing about IBCLCs. One never knows if this is
their first official call as an IBCLC, stepping into the waters, or the person
has many years of actual experience, or where their experience was gained,
what aged babies their experience may have been focused on. ( Moms can
look up how long someone may have been certified officially, most don't, but
this still tells them nothing about how much real experience she has
working alone with new moms in differing, desperate situations.) Since IBLCE has
no practical component to its exam, there is no assessment of anything but
book learning/test performance that has been judged. Looking back I
think, wow, those poor mothers who saw me in the first, uh, 5-7 years... :)
Peace,
