I've been following the discussion on licensure with interest. I jump
in with some trepidation as Natalie, Liz and Susan write formidable
posts.
I come to this from a somewhat unique perspective. I am a
Breastfeeding Peer Counselor with WIC and became an IBCLC before I
started working with the program. After becoming an IBCLC, I
discovered that without opening my own business my options were very
limited since I am not a RN.
The topic of licensure has been on my mind lately since I have had
several mothers tell me they've spoken to a Lactation Consultant and
include the name of people that aren't. These are cases where the
mother would have benefited from a higher level of care with time
being of the essence. I understand the confusion with the various
types of certifications available but these mothers specifically
thought they were dealing with an IBCLC.
Wouldn't licensure limit people being able to claim they are a
Lactation Consultant when they aren't?
Does LLLI take a stance on Leaders calling themselves Lactation Consultants?
Thank you for the thought provoking conversation, ladies.
