Hi All,
I must say I am dismayed to see such a tone of disdain today while reading
my Lactnet digests. I haven't seen anything of the like in quite a while so
it was quite a shock to read ones dismissing of another's expertise so out
of hand and in such a disrespectful manner. There is a way to ask for
references and a way not to in my opinion.
I'd like to gently remind us all that we come from a varied background with
a varied education and experience set. We have members all around the globe
- we do not all believe, live, experience life or parent the same way. And
just because one does not 'see' or understand another's experience or
education does not mean that education lacks value or is even inaccurate.
In fact, one might actually consider stepping back and researching the ideas
and comments the other is expressing that seem to (or do) conflict with
one's own experience and education. Many times I have done this and come
away with a new skill set, and a new way to help my clients. When I dismiss
someone's education or expertise out of hand (whether in private or in
public) I hurt only myself and my clients who may benefit from a different
viewpoint. It also limits my ability to work with clients who may also have
different traditions and beliefs than I do. I truly believe we can always
continue to learn. I don't always agree with what others present - but that
is OK. They don't always agree with me.
I have learned more here on Lactnet than any other forum and it is because
many of us come from dramatically different perspectives and we are
encouraged to share, agree and disagree in a polite and professional manner.
So please - can we keep it nice and respectful? Just because we don't agree
does not mean we should do so in an unprofessional manner.
Thank you.
