Hi Rachel,
This year management is providing fruit trays for the Womens' Center staff
(at change of shift on 2 different days to catch the 2 staff rotations) to
thank them for helping and supporting bf. I will deliver them. I want staff
to feel appreciated and to continue to make strides in the direction of
supporting bf.
Change is slow but has definitely improved along with our bf rates, and
next, I really want to work on skin to skin holding in the 1 hr after
uncomplicated birth -- for all babies not just bf ones, becoz that would
only be about 50%.
Today we kicked off a little promotion whereby I have 2 great videos from
ILCA/Injoy, the first is about Latch and Early Management, the 2nd is about
Early bf Challenges. Counseling and how to talk to moms in a positive way
is covered as well as practical techniques. This will not be mandatory but
all staff will be encouraged to watch the dvds during the month of August.
When someone has completed watching the entire 1st video, they fill out a
slip of paper and put it in a decorated box. If they watch the 2nd one,
they do the same. We are using the honor system. The slip of paper says "I
have watched the entire video <title of video>. At the end of the month we
will draw 2 names for 2 gift cards, one from each shift.
I also wrote an article (I do this every year and thankfully they publish
it without changes) about world bf week, what it is about, the who code,
the innocenti declaration, how mothers or nurses can get help. It is
published online for our hospital system (8 or so hospitals in the region).
Thanks for asking!
