I wonder if Dr. Buescher might have some thoughts on this?

=============
Hi Laura,
Had a similar yet different situation just a couple of months ago. I
don't believe any steroids were used. Baby was put on formula for 1-2
weeks. Only specifics were for mom to choose the lowest calcium
formula she could find, she wasn't given a brand or type. The formula
did not lower baby's levels and he was allowed to resume bf.
In this case, mom had very high calcium levels herself prior to,
during and after pregnancy. After bf was resumed she pumped during
interim) she got mastitis, she returned to work, her levels continued
to be high so it was recommended she wean. Apparently, in rare cases,
some mothers have higher calcium levels when bf. Her levels did go
down but are still elevated. Last I heard, no cause has been found.
Parathyroid tumor was ruled out and she was having DNA sequencing
done.
I do not have access to all my notes right now. I can get you more
info on Monday. I was in touch with a couple of people on this list. I
served mostly as a support person for mom. It was a frustrating
situation in which I wished I could do more. I provided names of labs
which would measure calcium levels of breast milk but the MD's were
not willing to test. As mother was exclusively pumping during the
formula trial, it would have been simple to get a good sample.
I plan to write things up for future reference, am waiting on copies
of the labs from the mother. Now that she is no longer bf, she is not
as motivated to have it documented as she was when it was all
happening. Of course, she is working FT w/a long commute, has 2
children and feels poorly the majority of the time.
From what I learned, the calcium levels of breast milk vary very little.
HTH. I can provide what information I do have, which is limited.
All the best,

Does anyone have experience with an exclusively breastfed infant with
mild-moderate hypercalcemia (serum calcium levels between 10-11.7 for
4+ weeks now)? Was there any intervention for the hypercalcemia? If
so, what? At this point one endocrinologist has recommended treating
with steroids and a second has recommended low calcium formula.
Neither of those recommendations is particularly appealing. There is
no official diagnosis for the baby yet. Williams syndrome is unlikely
but hasn't been totally ruled out. Hyperparathyroidism has been ruled
out, PTH was very low.
Any IBCLC endocrinologists or experts on calcium homeostasis out there:-)
Thanks in advance,
