In my community, there has been a higher than normal level of sexual abuse.
I always wash. If I am only gently pushing in mom's breast so I can see
baby's chin/lip, I won't wear a glove. However, I make sure mom knows what
I'm doing, why I'm doing it. They are comfortable knowing that it's my
fingernail side that touches her breast.
I use a sterile glove to check for TT.
I always wear gloves when doing any other breast assessment, putting them
on the last moment before I examine. The barrier is important to moms who
have had previous abuse - and to moms who have had no abuse. I don't know
who has or does not have the history, so I glove at all times. It's
expected procedure in my community.
