Dandelion is a wonderful herb for new mothers and for us. As a nutritional herb it is safe for nursing mothers. The root is a lovely liver tonic.....and most new mothers who deliver in a US hospital could certainly benefit from a liver tonic! The leaf is a nice diuretic. When a mother has labored, been given an epidural with bags of fluid & then gone to C/S, she will often experience edema in the following days. Dandelion leaf can certainly help her release this fluid. I do not use dandelion when a mother has a gallstone.
It is sad that a mother was given the advice to pump & dump when taking dandelion.
