Pain is a subjective, but I do believe that nipple pain indicates that
something is wrong. Nipple tenderness at initial latch in the first week is
usually acceptable. I do tell mothers this as I would rather they call for
help sooner rather than later.
I have had mothers phone me on day 43 saying breastfeeding still hurts.
They have been told that 6 weeks of nipple pain is normal! Some of these
women deserve a medal for continuing so long with severe nipple trauma.
Recently saw a mother with badly damaged nipples - baby was almost
exclusively breastfeeding at 3 months. She had been told that the latch was
"perfect". No, it was not!
