I'm posting for another LLL/IBCLC who is not yet on Lactnet. Hoping Nancy Wright could weigh in. Please contact her off-list at:

Do any of you guys work with premies a lot? I am helping another Leader with a mom of twins born 6 weeks early. The pediatrician is having the mom give 4 ounces of formula a day for the entire first year to make up for the iron stores they didn't get during the final weeks of pregnancy. Is this really the right way for them to get the extra iron? I would have thought a supplement would be a better choice. Could the doctor think the supplement would cause more of a risk of constipation or GI issues?

The mom just stated they were premature and spent a few weeks getting stronger in the NICU, but there were no physical issues.
