It was wonderful to hear this research.
We here in Iroquois culture have taught moms that babies learn far more by
facial expressions than words in early stages. We always point this out to
moms of teething babies/toddlers. If a mom laughs and says ouch ouch -
baby still sees a smile and thinks - Oh! I just made mommy happy! Let's do
it again!
We tell our moms instead, to look stern and hurt so babies will think - Oh
NO!! I just made mommy upset - I can't do THAT again. Babies learn very
fast not to bite mom with this strategy when compared to moms who continue
the laughing (or the dads and supporters continue to laugh).
