Here is what I sent surgery: I talked to the folks at Texas Tech Infant Risk Center who study meds and breastfeeding. They do not recommend phenergan be given at all to breastfeeding moms due to the risk of resp depression in the infant. And it has a long half-life which would take about 2.6 days to completely clear.
Therefore, they suggest benadryl as an alternative (which I guess could be used for agitation) and zofran for nausea. These are safe. Could this be implemented? Let me know. (here is the prior email from the surgery dept: We use Phenergan alot with PP patients. We also use it for nausea and agitation. Alot of those pt. come in crying and panicing and the Phenergan will help them calm down. But, we will stop giving to the breast feeding moms if thats what we need to do. Or, should we give the mom the choice to take it or not, if needed?
