Susan's original email got me perusing the web for more info about the "child hatcheries". I attended a Nils Bergman conference a couple of years ago and was shocked to hear that isolettes were introduced into neonatal care without ever scientifically establishing their efficacy, benefit or degree of risk (surprised - no, shocked - yes!)
I came upon this very interesting article, "Historical Review and Recent Advances in Neonatal and Perinatal Medicine" at
http://www.neonatology.org/classics/mj1980/ch08.html
It is well worth a quick read. How far we have come, and yet how far we still have to go!
