I hope all Aussie Lactnetters are aware that the draft of the NHMRC infant feeding guidelines has been released. http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/guidelines/public-consultations
It is important that they receive feedback on this, and submissions close beginning of December. I have yet to go over it with a fine tooth comb but on first look the most glaring issue to me is that they contain very little information on the risks of using infant formula (the epidemiological stuff and other risks associated with incorrect use like hypernatraemia) and very little detail on how to most safely prepare infant formula. 80 pages or so on breastfeeding and breastfeeding problems and 10 on formula feeding. Seems that they think that little instruction on formula feeding is required. There is also no recommendation that health workers advise mothers on the importance of and ways in which the amount of infant formula used can be minimised.
