Health Canada had a strong message (sent out to all maternity hospitals and public health units across Canada) that powdered formula should not be used for a baby under 1 month because it wasn't sterile.
Recently, without any fanfare and despite the fact Enterobacter sakazakii (Cronobacter spp.) is still being reported, Health Canada changed their statement to read, "infants who are premature, have a low birth weight or weakened immune system should drink sterile liquid infant formula if they're not being breastfed" but (you "gotta" love this) "if caregivers or parents don't have access to liquid infant formula or when a suitable liquid infant formula is not available, powdered infant formula can be used if it's prepared properly".
Guess who lobbied for the change in the wording?? But then what can you expect when decision makers let the companies get close - after all they pay big dollars for their lobby so they expect something in exchange.
Canadians and international people, concerned about what has been found in formulas, have been writing Health Canada about their weakened statement and it is next on my "do" list after Newark / Nestle!
