We had a case today in the hospital and I was wondering what others might do. First birth with "very heavy bleeding " after birth, according to the report that the nurses gave me. What I wanted to know is: being that she will probably be going home not much after 48 hours and we have no follow up contact, would you mention to her ( among the other guidance given) that a major blood loss MIGHT have an effect on her milk supply and if that she does not see an adequate increase by the end of the first week she might want to discuss treatment with domperidone with her HCP and/or be on top of her need for iron.
Others felt that since we don't know that that will happen there is no need to mention it as it is not relevant and might be discouraging.
Thanks, as always, for sharing your perspective,
Riva Weissfish BA, CCE, IBCLC
