Sara Dodder Furr wonders how this report will impact our work with new
mothers.
Seems pretty obvious to me: we need to caution mothers using this
medication that they should not breastfeed their lab rats.

Sorry, couldn't resist. Feeling a little punchy after the last couple of
days where everyone in the country (from the Minister for Equality and
Children right down to the usual suspects in online discussion threads in
the media) is having a swing at the recommendation for exclusive BF for 6
months here. It prevents women from catching up with men in pay levels, it
prevents fathers from having contact with their children, and it causes
eating disorders because if babies aren't exposed to 'other tastes' between
four and six months, they will resist all new foods indefinitely. And let's
not forget that 'many' women simply can't breastfeed so we should stop
talking about it because it makes them feel like bad mothers.

Never mind that the reason I earn less than a man is that my profession is
undervalued (by the government who sets my pay rate) compared to typical
male occupations, that babies occasionally let go of the breast and look
around for other company, and that the taste of breastmilk changes
constantly as a result of what the mother consumes. That would be so
BORING, sticking to 'facts' rather than just mouthing off about why you
think BF is unnecessary or even harmful.

To top it all off, I spent half an hour studying the 'baby food' shelves in
my supermarket today. Well, yuck, is all I can say. Rows of jars of
'dinner', all virtually identical, orange-toned homogeneous mush with a
'best before' date in late 2013, with labels claiming that the contents were
anything from 'spaghetti and meat sauce' to 'grandma's stew', with 'turkey
and root vegetables' in between. And then there was the 'organic' line - in
tubes, with screw-on caps. 'Beef casserole' in a tube! Just squeeze out as
much as you want and re-cap for later use? Or let the child suck it
straight from the tube to avoid mess? A product called 'between meal' which
I guess means 'snack', consisting of yogurt, fruit, and oatmeal, sealed in a
plastic tub, requiring no refrigeration and with a shelf life of more than 6
months. It was SCARY. There was even cooked oatmeal in little jars, since
oatmeal is so difficult to prepare from 'scratch' and inconvenient to
transport in its dry form. I almost needed an antidepressant myself
afterwards!
