Subject: Re: A balanced report on bed-sharing

At last, a mainstream media report actually takes Jim McKenna's research
seriously.  Check it out at:

Yes, it was a very good report.  Unfortunately, the broadcast was 18 months
ago.  While the city's current campaign to reduce infant mortality, especially
in minority neighbords is well intentioned, they are acting as if bed-sharing is
the most imporatnt, if not the only intervention that will help.  The current
push has new billboard and bus card ads showing a baby sleeping next to a
butcher knife or clever and the warning that a parent sleeping wth their baby is
just as dangerous.  Where is the concern about "causing guilt" that authorities
use as an excuse not to tell the whole truth about dangers of not brestfeeding?
Health officials have acknowledged that there are ways to bedshare safely, but
are reluctant to publicize/promote them as they are seen as "too confusing
for parents".  How paternalistic!  Following that "logic", maybe we should
discourage driving since rules for doing so safely might be "too confusing.
Give me a break!

Feeling a wee bit better having let off a little of the "steam" building up.
