Dear Lactnet Friends:
All of human milk is important and babies need all of it.
That a mother would throw away her foremilk is a reflection of how the
public perceives the teaching that we have given. Somehow hind milk has
become perceived as the "right" or "best" milk. I think this could be in
part because lactoengineering is used appropriately in NICU and been
extrapolated to term infants.
I saw a similar phenomenon in childbirth education. A long time ago,
mothers with hypertension or gestating babies at risk of IUGR, were advised
to sleep on their left sides to maximize uterine blood flow to the baby. I
watched as this specific intervention spread to become a topic in
childbirth class, with healthy mothers with normal pregnancies concerned
about their sleeping positions.
A down-side to the information explosion......what to do?
warmly,
