Is there really nothing more recent than this paper from 1953? Hard to believe, especially after the melamine-in-formula scandal.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1988666/pdf/archdisch01408-0003.pdf

I imagine there are expensive protein-specific (or other) tests...(ELISA tests, I say with only a vague notion of what that means), but is there no quick/cost-effective way that has been developed in the last 60 years ? Perhaps this is because it’s more lucrative to investigate marketable tests.......

As a COMPLETE aside: while researching this, I came across this fascinating report on a Sept 11 presentation at the European Respiratory Society 2011 Annual Congress:
Low-Fat Yogurt During Pregnancy Linked Childhood Asthma
http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/750389

Final part of the report:

‘Joachim Heinrich, PhD, an epidemiologist from the Helmholtz Research Center in Munich, Germany, said Ms. Maslova's findings replicate the findings his group made several years ago, although the current study is far larger.

‘ "The issue of fatty acids has a potential impact on the industry. Industry uses CLAs to harden margarine, so it is essential for them. In the past, 5 or 6 papers on margarine intake have consistently shown an increased risk for several atopic outcomes. CLA content has been reduced in margarines due to past findings, but it is not known whether this had any effect on health."

‘ "The key point in Maslova's study is whether this is a finding related to fatty acids [CLAs] or a proxy for general lifestyle, such as the use of semiskimmed milk and low-fat yogurt in a so-called 'healthy' lifestyle. We already know these people have a higher allergy risk." ‘

Best wishes

(Thinking that the more we mess with milk of any sort, the worse the outcomes)
