Hello wise ones,
I recently ran across a clinical situation that has me stumped. A new mom of a late-preterm infant started pumping with a good-quality pump (and correctly fitting flanges). The IBCLC working with her described the colostrum (from both breasts) as the darkest brown colostrum she had ever seen - almost black, did not change in color over the pumping session, and normal colostral consistency. Still looks the same today - waaay darker than typical "rusty pipe" milk...I searched the archives and the internet - the only identified cause of colostrum this color is the use of Minocycline in the mother, but this mom has never taken this med. No recent breast trauma in this young, first-time mom's history. Any thoughts? Have any of you seen similar colostrum?
