Permission to post: Baby dob 6/30/11 at home to a mom after 10 years w/o a baby. Birth wt. was 9#8. Had big meconium bm in first 24 hours. Baby nursing well, no pain for mom. No jaundice. All seems normal as can be -- except that baby did not have another bm until day 14 when mother gave baby small amt. of fleet enema. Baby produced two large bm's that were brown and smooth like chocolate pudding. Today is day 18 and no more bm's. Mom has not tried another enema. As of Friday, baby weighed 8#6. Mother has been pumping and supplementing in small amounts with her milk. Mother has been seeing her pediatrician all along and he has suggested first, a tincture of time and midweek he suggested some water and a small amt. of prune juice for the baby, both of which the mother did but w/o result. Mother is reporting baby looks and acts just fine. I am only helping her via phone and email bc of distance and she understands that there is only so much I can do.
Midwife is a CLC and is also attending. All report baby is otherwise vigorous and when a before/after weight was done, baby gained 2 oz. Mother eats very cleanly. She is considering supplementing with goat's milk but is loathe to push more through with nothing coming out. Clearly, the weight is way below what it should be. I have told her this is a medical issue as we have eliminated milk supply and transfer issues. Baby's tummy is not hard or distended. Anyone every encountered such?
