Dear all:

I for one learned oral assessments right from the start when I went through a training program in Manhattan. Most of the private practice IBCLCs I know well have learned how to do oral assessments. If they mentor IBCLCs they do show their mentees how to do oral assessments. Plus we have Cathy Genna here in Manhattan who does an annual workshop now where she talks about oral assessment. So, her "sweep of the finger" looking for the "speed bump" versus the "wall" is a nice new addition that I've learned post training. I can't speak about the amorphous "large majority" of IBCLCs, I can only speak about the smaller subset that I know. I also know that hospitals in Manhattan have become remarkably more proactive about spotting potentially restricted tongues and referring to competent infant ENTs.

Best regards,

Susan Burger, MHS, PhD, IBCLC
