Dear Lactnet Friends:

<http://www.malaya.com.ph/oct24/liv3.html>

In some cases babies develop nipple confusion as a result of the shift from
feeding directly from the mother to bottle feeding and vice versa.

Yabot said this is because a mother’s nipple is a lot softer and is usually
stimulated by the baby’s tongue to release the milk, while a feeding
bottle’s nipple is harder, thicker and only requires the mouth and cheek to
release the milk. This may also sometimes lead to a continues flow of milk
that could eventually lead to choking.

To help avoid this, Pigeon, Japan’s leading baby and maternity manufacturer
that is distributed in the country by Richwell Philippines Inc., launched
its latest innovation the Peristaltic PLUS which is a new nipple that is
designed to enable baby to suck more efficiently.

Pigeon’s Opersshou Hiratsuka said Peristaltic PLUS is made of a silicone
rubber that is "soft and flexible enough for babies."

The nipple also has fine bumps or texturing at its outside edge to keep the
baby’s lips from sticking to the surface and while its tip is designed to
fit the sucking fossa, or the small indent in baby’s mouth. It also comes in
two kinds of holes to adjust flow according to a baby’s stage of development
or age.
