I'm not sure where you are, but you should be aware that mom will likely need to manage her expectations to some extent. I've been doing some research in this area (I'm not a lawyer) - I think most breastfeeding advocates (and mothers) would be pretty surprised at how breastfeeding is treated in family law. While Dettwyler's research will support her, the weight given to anthropological/sociological research in a family court is just not likely to cut it. In addition to being prepared to have her and her child assessed by psychologist, the child's physician would be useful. Also, trying to limit Dad's access due to breastfeeding is not likely to be a good strategy. Breastfeeding a five year old is well outside the norms of child behaviour in Canada, anyway - regardless of what the science says. Whether the courts can force to wean is a question that I am still not clear on - but I suspect that's because it resolves itself most of the time. Obviously, her lawyer is the person to advise her - but knowing going in what her expectations vs. what the current climate is will be an advantage.

Michelle
