Dear all:

The term co-sleeping merely means that the baby is sleeping in close proximity to the parents. By that definition of cosleeping and SAFER than a baby sleeping in a separate room (which has a 36% higher risk of SIDS). And it is in fact what the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends. BED SHARING is when the baby is in bed with the parents. There are some additional risk factors when bed sharing is not as safe that parents need to know about.

The looseness of language used in the whole ABSTINENCE ONLY style approach to SIDS really makes it impossible for parents to understand what they can do to make a safer environment for their babies.

We too, should be careful with our language.

Best regards,

Susan Burger
