My favourite study in this topic area is this one, which looked at babies
aged up to six months:
KENT, J. C., MITOULAS, L. R., CREGAN, M. D., RAMSAY, D. T., DOHERTY, D. A.
&
HARTMANN, P. E. (2006) Volume and Frequency of Breastfeedings and Fat
Content of Breast Milk Throughout the Day. Pediatrics, 117, e387-395.
Shows the volume of milk taken at any one feed in healthy, thriving babies
varies between 0 ml (yes, zero!) and 240 mls.
Heather,
Thanks for sharing this citation. It reminds me: I really need to print
this out and work it into some kind of sheet that moms can look at easily.
The range of normal being so wide is quite amazing. What is common is so
different from what MDs tell moms is normal. Maybe it would help those poor
moms whose pediatrician tells them (repeatedly) that their one month old baby
who wakes up every 2 hours at night must be waking "so frequently" because
her milk "isn't rich enough at night."
Peace,
Judy
