It hits all my wrong buttons as well. We do have similar programs here and what annoys me most, I guess, is the hypothesis that is brought out as the one and only holy truth that baby crying is normal. And biologically, evolutionary and psychologically just is not normal for an infant to cry his heart out, day after day for hours and hours. If it was normal, it would be universal and it just isn't. Inconsolable crying in infants is hardly seen in this magnitude outside of western or industrialized cultures.
And all these programs focus on stop-the-crying because it is so annoying to parents they tend to harm their child. No one of these programs thinks a second about what the crying means and how baby functions.
babies simply need to be in arms and at breast the majority of each day and night. If that were the message people got as only preparation to becoming a parent (in the same way messages about shaken baby syndrome, co-sleeping, SIDS, ... are given), the world would be a different place

Does the "period of purple crying" campaign rub anyone else the wrong way? Do babies really need to cry, the website states "all babies go through this period". Hmmmm.....
