I sometimes use the analogy of transportation. If you want to go to California, you could maybe get there on a skateboard, but you'd be awful tired when you got there (from here in tennessee). Better get a cadillac (or a jet plane!) if you don't want to enjoy your visit in California!

Subject: Re: PIS as good as a hospital grade
I have a schtick for this situation - In my area, it's often dad who is upset about having to go rent a hospital pump when they already have this expensive consumer grade pump. I tell him that the consumer pump is a perfectly good screwdriver, but right now mom needs a hammer. Later on, when she needs a screwdriver, it will be there. You /can/ hammer a nail into the wall with a screwdriver, but it's not good for either the wall OR the screwdriver. This sets a picture in their mind of a shattered screwdriver handle and a wall with pockmarks around the nail.
They usually 'get it'.
