Here is an update on the mom whose normally whitish expressed milk developed a bright pink color after being refrigerated…..
Lab results on the mother's expressed breast milk culture was negative for pathogenic bacteria. Baby’s mouth culture came back with two bacteria identified: Prevotella and enterobacter cloacae.
Mother continues to pump and give expressed breast milk to her infant. Mother is trying to get her baby to latch; so far, without success.
Mother has cleaned and bagged the electric pump (borrowed from a friend) which she had been using when her milk was turning pink. She did this as a precaution, in case there was some contamination harbored in the pump. She is now using an Ameda Elite pump, on loan from WIC. Mom and baby are well, without symptoms of illness.
