Apologies for my flippancy when Sara does raise very legitimate concerns
about the possible consequences of this research.
Hale continues to be a good resource, no? SSRIs are relatively new on the
scene. So is supporting women to continue breastfeeding through postnatal
depression - not to mention the increasing numbers of people on long-term
SSRI treatment.

I think we have to be as cautious as we always are, and as honest as we
always are. We don't have all the answers. Research continues, the
current knowledge is highly perishable and needs to be kept updated. Some
medications have been around for longer than others so we know more about
their side effects and their safety. Combining medication with traditional
counseling/psychotherapy, or opting entirely away from medications where
possible, are options. In the end it comes down to women making the best
decisions they can with the information at hand.

We should also be encouraging women to participate in reporting schemes
for monitoring side effects of maternal medications on their breastfed
children, so we can guide mothers more assuredly in future.

Norway, where the 'debate' continues, pitting pay equity for women and men
on the one hand against breastfeeding on the other - I don't understand how
we ended up here and I hate it, and I can't figure out why the fact that
women lactate, should prevent them from earning as much as men - nor do I
understand what joy the press get from bashing breastfeeding - don't think
I can stomach the TV debate scheduled for this evening, it really makes me
feel physically ILL, particularly since it was the minister for equality
and for children who started the whole silly discussion
