In my experience any pump is as good as mom's comfort with it and the instructions she gets about pumping, milkflow and let down reflex. In spite of research that claims otherwise, milkflow is not about (strength of) suction, but about being able to trigger a good let down reflex. A pump may be as good as manufactureres claim, if mom feels awkward being hooked up as a cow in a milking stable, it won't work. And if mom is comfortable with it, she'll be able to produce tons of milk with an old-fashioned Kaneson. many moms will do best with their own hands.

Hello there,
permission to post
I am working with a mom of twins (born at 36 weeks) who are now 1.5 weeks old. Neither is latching at all. Mom has had breast reduction 8 years ago. She was told by someone at the pharmacy that the Medela freestyle is as effective as a symphony or elite. Is this true, based on your experience?
I don't have much experience with pumps and the only info I have is from medela, who states that the freestyle is appropriate for "maintaining supply." This mother is in a precarious situation and needs to establish and build her supply. My gut is telling me she needs a rental pump, but I want to hear what you all have to say.
Thanks!
