We have found many times, and the literature shows, that often these
cases of stubborn yeast really are bacterial infections. Was the
abscess organism identified? I doubt it was yeast, or I think mother
would be hospitalized for treatment, no?
Even with a new pregnancy, I think this breast infection needs to be
sorted out and perhaps cultured and treated effectively. I would not
recommend a weaning under these circumstances. Mother can certainly
speed up the toddler's weaning a little, if he tolerates it, but
during a mastitis is not the best time. In light of mother's
ambivalence and toddler's expected distress over abrupt weaning, it
seems best to let the weaning takes its natural course, if possible.
Mother should keep her breasts well drained til the infection is
resolved.
