Jim McKenna says that dads vary in their sensitivity to their baby in
bed. Some are safe, others not so much! My own husband took way longer
than I did to hear our kids crying if they were in another room, but if
they were in bed with us, he was very sensitive to their presence, even
rolled out once when the mobile baby crowded him too much. If I returned
baby to the crib, he would wake with a start and ask where the baby was.
If he took a nap alone with the baby, he slept in a protective position
with his forearm under the baby's neck. We didn't know a thing as new
parents, it's only now looking back at photos that I see what a great
job he did!
I find my clients usually know whether their husbands are sensitive in
their sleep or sleep like a rock, and act accordingly in deciding
whether to put the baby in between the parents or alongside mom only.
