Hello Wise Ones,
This is my first post although I have been lurking for years.
I have a client who is 3 days Post Partum with her first baby.
She is having difficulty breastfeeding but this is not the reason for the post. She has EXTREMELY sensitive and painful nipples AND areolas and has had this since puberty and she has never been able to tolerate anyone touching them, let alone sucking them.
Her nipples are very fibrous and the fibrous tissue seems to extend down into the breast. I touched her areolas and nipples and she broke out into tears. 2 minutes on the pump brought her to tears. 2 minutes baby sucking brings her to tears. She can comfortably massage her breasts and hand express a little (baby has been getting formula finger fed and whatever drops she can get out of colostrum).
Latch doesn’t seem to be an issues, it is really a nipple issue for the mom.
Any suggestions? Trying a nipple shield in this case??
Thank you so much for any input and suggestions.
