Dear Lactnet Friends:

Please read this article.

We all talk about the benefits of human milk and the risks of infant
formula. How then, does it make sense to denigrate an informal milk sharing
movement? Informal milk sharing is logical, and wonderful when practiced
responsibly.

What we eat matters; what we feed our babies matters. Why should we feed our
babies food that contains rocket fuel residue, genetically modified
ingredients, MSG, phytoestrogens, silicon and aluminum?

Milk banks have stringent criteria for accepting donations; to ensure safety
for the milk given to the sickest and most fragile babies. These criteria
keep some mothers from donating milk. If a woman has more milk than she can
use, and wants to give to another mother, why not?

The authors make the point that informal milk-sharing needs to be
done responsibly. Milk Sharing groups suggest the blood tests that donors
should have, and recommend that the tests be repeated every 6 months. They
give guidelines for screening donors, and information about how to heat
treat milk. If a woman can cook, she can heat treat her milk.

There is no way to prevent all risk. That is life. I can't understand why
the mainstream default option, that makes so many babies sick and kills
some, is being so vigorously attacked by various organizations. Is it
because women are taking control?

warmly, ( On another topic, foods whose PLU label codes start with a 8 are
genetically modified.)
