Hi Bev;
Feeding in an upright position (straddling mom's leg, or in a
"sitting" football hold) is very helpful for GE reflux, as is maintaining an
upright position for burping and for about 20 mins subsequent to a feeding.
In practice, the mom can nurse the baby on one side, slide him into her lap,
burp him by gently sitting him on her lap and rocking him SLIGHTLY back and
forth, then sliding him to the other breast. After the feed, baby can sit in
an infant seat or be carried on mom's shoulder.
I personally believe allergy contributes to GER. Some infants seem
to have looser sphincters as well, so food is not held in the stomach, but
comes back up the esophagus. This is why the upright positioning and gentle
handling helps, by reducing the stress on these sphincters. GER is especially
common among hypotonic infants.
Hope this helps, Welcome to Lactnet!
