This is absolutely what this survey is about - parental perceptions
of what their babies are like, and this is 100 per cent dependent on
what they *expect* from a baby.

This is true - the most popular books in the UK are written by Gina
Ford (who has a large list now - weaning, toddlers, potty training,
etc etc). I dont actually blame the books - I am pretty sure most
parents don't actually follow them or even read them . But they are
aware of the contents, and the contents do no more than reflect a
certain strand of thinking that is very often voiced. The other book
most often cited is the Baby Whisperer.
Neither of these books has anything important or useful to say about
breastfeeding and infant-mother relationships.
What is worse, though, than books, is the lack of support many
mothers get when they ask their HCPs about what their babies 'should'
be doing. It is, after all, part of their job to know about normal
infant behaviour and development.
