Dear Lactnet Friends:

Susan writes about this fabulous biography. The first chapter is outstanding
for its wonderful explanation of the roots of today's parenting. It talks
about the days when mortality rate was 100% in orphanages, about the germ
theory that lead folks to discard breastfeeding because babies would get
germs from the close contact. Add that to the new 'science' of psychology
that said babies don't love their mothers (they only learn to love their
mothers because their mothers feed them) and that babies have to be
well-trained from the start to grow into productive citizens and the
foundations for our present devaluation of breastfeeding become more clear.

Today, no one realizes that germs are usually only half the cause of
infectious disease. (There are powerful exceptions, such as cholera.) We all
have enough germs on our skin right now to kill us; it is only when our
resistance gets low (from poor nutrition, injury, depression) that we become
susceptible to them.

warmly,
