Sure! What matters is not so much HOW milk is removed from the breast
but how effectively and how well the breast is drained. Pumps are
convenient because you can express from both breasts at once, and the
hospital grade pumps cycle more smoothly and express milk more rapidly
than most moms can hand express. I am a fan of teaching all moms to hand
express - one never knows when there might be a pump failure or
blackout! In fact, during the last blackout, I had 3 mothers who were
pump dependent come to my office to learn how to hand express.

I was under the impression that frequent hand expression is sufficient to bring in a milk supply for mother's whose babies cannot latch for a variety of reasons. Is this true? Can you bring in a full milk supply and maintain it with hand expression alone if necessary?
