Karen,
Are you referring to using pasteurized donor milk or screened
unpasteurized donor milk for the term healthy infant?
Either one would be better than formula for a term infant.
Ask these doctors why they believe that donor milk is not beneficial to
the term infant. I'll bet that they will say something about antibodies.
Doctors get hung up on the issue that pasteurized donor milk is lacking
antibodies so is no good anymore. That is a theory of the uneducated,
demonstrating their lack of knowledge regarding infant nutrition. First
of all, many antibodies do remain.
Pasteurization does not destroy many components, esp oligosaccharides
and fatty acids, both of which are antiinflammatory, antiinfective. The
fatty acids are essential for optimal neural growth and development
(brain and retina). In addition, lactoferrin and various enzymes, also
anti infective, anti inflammatory and immunomodulatory, remain as well.
Formula is just a bunch of chemicals and sugar, with no active
biological components.
