Rachel, I know it wasn't funny at all, but I had to laugh at the image of
you holding the nurse in a strangle-hold while you asked her the question!!
It is so appalling the bad advice about breastfeeding and mothering that
women are given by the very people they trust to guide them.
The story also reminded me about when my first grandchild was born eight
weeks premature. When he was taken to the nursery, with my son, I stayed
behind with my daughter-in-law while she was cleaned up, and helped her
express some colostrum. We then headed down to the nursery. The first nurse
who came over said to my daughter-in-law "Your midwife may be pressuring you
to breastfeed, but you should know that breastfeeding isn't the best thing
for premature babies." My daughter-in-law just looked at her, laughed, and
said "Um, have you met my mother-in-law?"
