Advocacy Alert: FDA Requests Comments on Infant Formula Labels

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is asking for comment by May 2 on an experimental study it wishes to conduct to collect consumer information on structure/function claims used on infant formula labels. "An example of the type of statements that are of interest is: "Supports brain and eye development?," FDA says in its March 3 Federal Register notice. "The purpose of the study is to assess women's understanding of and response to various state-ments on infant formula labels. The study results will be used to help the agency to under-stand the role that certain types of statements on infant formula labels have in influencing for-mula choice." The data will be collected over the Internet from a sample of 5,000 adult women selected from an online consumer panel. The study will focus on purchase choice, perceived similarity of the formula to breast milk, and perceived likelihood that the formula has certain health benefits.

Many clinicians have heard mothers voice comments that indicate confusion over infant for-mula claims which equate infant formula with human milk. It would be important that the FDA receive your input on such comments.

The notice in the Federal Register details how the study will be conducted, how to re-spond, and can be found athttp://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2011/2011-4740.htm.
