One of the only evidence-based reports about breastfeeding behaviors and
related outcomes for the first week is:
Dewey K, Nommsen-Rivers L, Heinig MJ & Cohen RJ (2003). Risk factors for
suboptimal infant breastfeeding behavior, delayed onset of lactation and
excess neonatal weight loss. Pediatrics, 112(3), 607-619. Retrieved today
from http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/112/3/607.long.
The sample was analyzed for primip/multip; vaginal/surgical delivery;
medicated/unmedicated. Average number of breastfeedings in the first 24
hours for babies doing well at a week and number for others are included.
