I think there will come a time when people will stop bothering trying to
attain the coveted IBCLC 'title' because it is too medicalized and far too
difficult to attain not only in other countries, but here in the USA as
well. Instead we will have many people out there in the field either
calling themselves lactation consultants without the certification (there is
no reason why they can't and we know they already do), and without a basic
knowledge of lactation, breastfeeding, feeding issues, tongue-tie,
counseling etc. Some may be good - other will not be. And there will be no
way for us or the moms to do anything about the bad ones...
If IBLCE continues to pursue such requirements that make it near impossible
for people to even consider taking the exam we will have a serious issue, if
we don't already. I think there is another option to consider - something
less drastic and certainly less confining than what they have presented.
And it is sad that we IBCLC's are not asked about any of this. Where is our
input?
I have a young mom who wants to mentor with me - she wants to be an IBCLC.
She will be wonderful - IF she can manage to get the requirements met - and
I don't know that she can...and THAT my friends is a HUGE waste of talent
and support that moms need. And that, to me, is reprehensible.
Respectfully,
Jaye
