Laurie, my last child had Intussusception at 10 months. It was excruciatingly painful for her, though her symptoms were fever, very very quiet, sweaty, not nursing well, but a little bit, and being still in my arms. She had been vomiting, and then had frank bloody diarrhea.

It's no laughing matter, either. She had a barium enema which reduced it, but I was not allowed to breastfeed her after the reduction, but was told she could have Cola, or bubbly sodas or apple juice. This was "because it might come back and need to be reduced under anesthesia surgically," and I asked why could she not breastfeed for comfort, (I could have and was willing to empty the breast first), and why was cola acceptible. The answer from the surgical resident, whom I despise to this day and remember his name...even, and Sally is 19.. was that if I did not like his rules, that I could take my baby and go home. I took her IV out, breastfeed her, and left to go home. I knew the symptoms of recurrence, and was ready to bring her back if it was necessary. She nursed and healed and that was that.
