One major difference about James Grant's statement is that he says
"exclusive breastfeeding", not "breastfeeding." The first quote also says nothing
about duration.
I would venture that both of these have an impact on infant mortality.
Also, doesn't the USA have fairly high infant mortality among the "developed
nations" and we certainly are nowhere near the poorest country. We do have
relatively low breastfeeding initiation, exclusivity and duration compared to
our Scandinavian friends...
