This is a great question! How did 10% become the cut off? I wonder if weight loss is related to birth weight in a different way. After learning about late preterm babies I started noticing that babies born under about 7 pounds sleep alot on the breast after their first 24 hours or so. Occasionally they'll do alot of suckling without much swallowing, and sometimes they're strong enough to manage for 2 days, then they start to sleep alot, suck/swallow little. They wake up hungry, but then have the same pattern of sleeping on the breast. Often moms will think they don't have enough milk. Is this what everyone else sees? Can we compare exclusively breastfed babies without taking their actual observed feedings into account? Do these babies lose more % than babies that are heavier/stronger? Judy
